Common Issues with Fresh Produce Packaging Bags: Insights from Huiyang Packaging

When it comes to the supply chain, fresh produce packaging bags are far more than just containers. At Imballaggio Huiyang, we understand that packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables is rarely as simple as it looks. Unlike inert goods, fresh produce is “alive”—it continues to respire and change after harvest. Moisture is released, temperatures fluctuate during transit, and handling conditions are often grueling.

Through our extensive project work, we’ve observed that packaging only reveals its true performance during actual transport and storage. Whether we are working with cherry tomatoes in Spain or leafy greens in Germany, certain patterns of failure—and success—repeat themselves.

1. Managing Moisture and Condensation

Moisture is usually the first sign that a packaging solution isn’t optimized. In one Imballaggio Huiyang project involving cherry tomatoes shipped to Central Europe, condensation formed within just 24 hours of transit.

We discovered that changing the material alone wasn’t the answer. By precisely adjusting bag perforation and film thickness, we managed to balance the internal micro-climate, ensuring the product arrived in peak condition.

2. Preventing Damage During Packing and Transport

Fresh produce often has stems, sharp edges, or uneven surfaces that create stress points. During a project for a client in Italy, we found that standard side-seal bags for grapes were puncturing at the corners during pallet stacking.

Imballaggio Huiyang solved this by switching to slightly thicker PE/PE laminated side-seal bags. This small structural adjustment led to a significant measurable result: a dramatic reduction in rejected pallets after just two weeks of shipments.

3. Balancing Airflow vs. Protection

The “Goldilocks zone” for produce is difficult to hit: you need enough airflow for respiration, but not so much that the product dehydrates.

During a collaboration with a Belgian distributor, we found that leafy vegetables require much smaller perforation holes than berries to prevent wilting. At Imballaggio Huiyang, we emphasize that perforation size must be customized to the specific respiration rate of the product to reduce retail complaints.

4. Ensuring Package Stability on the Shelf

A collapsed bag on a retail shelf sends a poor message to consumers. We helped a German citrus distributor move from unstable flat bags to PE/PE laminated stand-up pouches.

This structural shift didn’t just improve the look; it protected the fruit’s integrity. These eco-friendly fresh produce packaging bags maintain their shape even under weight, providing a premium, organized display that retailers love.
